Is it normal for my cat to only poop in the litterbox half the time?

My cat is 11 years old, and she will pee in her litter box every single time, but only poops in it about half the time. The other half, she poops on the carpet 12 feet from the box.
( the litter box is 7 feet away from the door to the room, the carpet she poops on is 14 feet away, on the far wall of the room, so it's not like she didn't make it in time)

Is It Normal?
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • Bring her to the vet : she may have an infection. Also eliminate the carpet : they can smell the poop even if you wash it and will think of it as another litter box.

  • My kitters died at 12 =[
He disappeared but I know he passed.
As for the litter box, train your kitty to go wee outside=]

  • Try putting the litter tray in the place she's going? That's what I did and eventual my cat started to get used to it :) don't listen to missy, my cats 20 and she's still going strong :) x

    • Hey, I said I wasn't trying to scare the OP, but it's still a possibility that may need to be taken into account. What if the OP listens to you, and then something really IS wrong? See?

But I DID recommend to try the simple fixes first, and your suggestion is a good one that I didn't think of. :)

  • Are you keeping the cat box cleaned out enough?

Are you providing deep enough litter?

Have you introduced a new cat or another pet?

Have you changed the type or brand of cat litter suddenly? (Some cats are super picky and hate little changes like that.)

First of all, rent a rug doctor and CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN the fuck out of that poo spot. Once you think you have it clean, fucking go over it again. (We had to rip out our carpet over repeat cat incidents... make sure you get it good!)

Make sure to deodorize the area very well, it can NOT smell, even for a cat. (Smell = Acceptable Potty Location)

Every time she does the deed, sternly tell her no (no beatings or nose rubbings) and lock her in a cat carrier or a bathroom for a while. This time-out method is actually much more effective for cats who don't respond well at ALL to beatings or nose rubbings like dogs will. (By "beatings", I mean paddling, like paddling a child's butt, NOT like punching, kicking, etc...)

    Hope these help, good luck!!

    • Yeah, she's got a nice big box that I clean once a day. She's only ever been the only animal in the house. There's plenty of the same type of litter we've always used.
I'll try the cleaning the rug extra well and maybe the timeout.
The vet said the only thing she can do is a full scan/test which is costly to probably not even tell us anything.

    • PS/ If none of the above work, you may need to call the vet. Sometimes, this is just a cat's way of letting you know something is wrong with them. They can't really tell you they're sick or in pain or whatever... and she's 11... that's pretty old in cat years...

Don't want to scare you or anything... I'm just saying it's a possibility. :/
