It's because by bringing another cat into his territory, you've invaded his kingdom.
The best way is to introduce them gradually and make sure you supervise them together until your older cat no longer views the newcomer as a stranger or a vet.
Maybe buying a book on cat behaviour would be a good idea, especially about introducing cats to each other.
to the author: she's just getting used to her new programming.. give it some time and they'll love each other. (and try not to get discouraged by the hissing. their just gatos :)
