Is it normal for my baby to be doing this following his heary surgery?

My 6 week old son was diagnosed with aortic valve stenosis. A closing of the aortic valve.
At his weekly review a scan found that his valve had got smaller and his heart was now going into failure. They needed to act fast. On Monday 26th April 2010 he was admitted into hospital. Tuesday morning he had his surgery. There were a few complications during the op, he went into cardiac arrest twice and needed to be resuscitated. He was then taking to intensive care.
By the end of that evening he was breathing on his own and taken to high care on the cardiac ward. Yesterday morning a scan showed that his heart function was alot better and he was allowed to go home to recover.
Since he has been home I have noticed that he keeps going into periods of shaking. I am wondering whether this is a side effect of the anesthetic. Does any one know any thing about this? I really don't want to be panicking about nothing!!!

Is It Normal?
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • Concerns about your child are never nothing. Contact your doctor and ask direct questions. The only dumb question is the one you don't ask.

  • It could be a side effect, but this isn't the time for guessing and assumptions. I pray it's nothing serious and you have already contacted the doctor. Give him a kiss for me and tell him there are other mommies who want him to feel better soon. God Bless!

  • That shaking isn't normal, it could be seizures! Call the hospital, the Dr. Someone!!! PLEASE!!! Don't wait for the next time!

  • You should have the surgeon on speed dial! They work for you so treat them that way, don't stop hounding them until YOU are comfortable and confident to monitor your baby. Good luck!

  • If the shaking is uncontrolable which problem means he is having seizures....if the shaking goes on for longer then 2 min and happens like every hour you definitely need to take him to the ER....I would definitely call the surgeon and ask him wut he thinks it could be....I would go back to the docter no matter what...

  • Call his surgen and ask him/her. There could a blood issue relating to the surgery that is affecting his brain. Even if it's nothing better safe than sorry I say.

Heck I had my wisdom teeth surgically removed a few months back. A few days post op I sneezed and felt a pop near my surgery site- you bet you bum I was on the phone to my surgen within the hour.
