Is it normal for my aunt to open my dad's mail?

is it normal for my aunt to open my fathers mail on basically my fathers death bed while in the hospital!? the letter i seen her opening was from AIG insurances one afternoon i went to visit my fathers house. shes from mexico and doesnt even spend that much time with my father to get 2 do these type of things!!.... and everbody knows that they deal with life insurances..... she doesnt even speak/read english to even understand the darn letter!!my thoughts are she thought my father was getting sort of money! idk it just seems very digusting what she did! and when i went to tell my uncles they gave me the cold shoulder!............ my dads family is horrible!!!!!

Is It Normal?

  • If she has power of attorney it's not only normal but required by law.

  • Mrjuandiego: maybe you should report her?
Sillykitty: you can call the postal service and have them forward any mail with your name to a different address ( you can create a po box or you can send it to a friends house). I did that before because I didn't want my parents snooping

  • I hate this type of people your aunt. is just wrong and seems like they're trying to live for free, and want free stuff.

  • opening anyone's mail is illegal. she is breaking the law. my mother opens my mail and i have threatened her that i will report her to the authorities because all she does is look at my bank statements, and bills and bitches and screams at me for nothing. (yelling why do i waste my money on this or that) anyhow
she has gotten worse at it by hiding my fkn mail from me now. i don't know what the fuck to do about it.
if you have any advice to help me get my mom to stop opening my mail PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!
as for your situation i am sorry he passed away, but that lady cannot open his mail. why don't you go up to her next time and rip it out of her hands and scream at her?
cause damn if that was my dad that passed away and i was put in charge of his personal belongings, i would get angry and really really mean if someone opened his mail(unless it was my brother r sister-i would not get mad) but for someone else like an aunt....oh yea i will get down and get fkn cuss her out and tell her to never come around again.

  • I would think that if your dad is unable to communicate then a designated person would be in charge of making decisions. If she is not that designated person then I believe what she is doing is illegal. Just an educated guess.

  • She can't legally open his mail with out his permission. Ask your dad (if he's able to respond) and confront her.

  • If he's on his death bed then I'm assuming he can't open his own mail or handle his affairs. We would have to know more about the situation to really give an educated opinion.
