  • Blame it on "our" government, they decided "we" should dispense with such antiquated notions like having an official language.

  • It should be a requirement to know the language if you wish to live and work in another country.

  • I say this, if you're going to go to a certain country you should learn the language of that country. At least enough to be able to communicate. That way it would make it easier for both parties.

  • The more things change the more they remain the same. It takes time to learn a foreign language. It really takes about a generation for immigrants to get good at the language of their new host country. The parents do their best learning after their kids learn the language and teach it to them.
Most Americans probably don't realize it but about a third of our country used to be part of Mexico until the US waged war against Mexico and confiscated HALF of their country in the 1840's. The entire southwest from Texas to Oregon was Spanish speaking Mexico. So we could just be a little more civilized about this language thing. They'll get the hang of it, but it takes time.

Part of the language problem starts in the schools in Mexico. To start with you can't go to school without uniforms and some people are too poor to buy the uniforms. One Mexican I worked with here said he studied English in school in Mexico because he planned to come to the US. The teachers were no good. He was taught to say English words with Spanish pronunciation. For instance, the word apple was pronounced "ah-play". When he got to the US people couldn't understand him even when he spoke our words because he had been taught to pronounce them wrong. It wasn't his fault he had incompetent teachers.

  • This is so stupid if you are going to another country you should at least know the basics and its not that Mexicans are lazy is that they are too old to know how to use the technology to learn the language but there kids actually learn the language and grow up knowing little Spanish

  • Not having an official language is a bad idea IMO, it leaves the door open for any foreign immigrant group to completely change the langua gdemographic- itl suck for non Spanish people if the business language switched over to spanish

  • I know, right. When I go there, I don't expect to have to learn the Mexican word for quesadilla and burrito and stuff.

  • This makes me think about people who come here to visit and when the locals don't understand what they're saying they're surprised.
