Is it normal for me to think transsexuals are mentally ill?

  • Don't be transphobic. I'm transgender and I am not mentally ill. I have had mental illnesses, but that was pre-transition and also partly because I was so upset because I was born in the wrong body. Now that I'm transitioning, I feel so much more comfortable and accepting of life.
You clearly don't understand transgender people at all. Gender identity and mental health are two different things. Sure, sometimes they coincide, such as when someone who is transgender suffers from gender dysphoria or anxiety/depression around their body image, but they are not synonymous and you can't put all trans people in the same boat and assume that transgender people are mentally ill. That's like saying "all black people are from Africa" or "veganism is an illness" just because vegans don't eat meat like their human omnivore bodies are designed to.
Sure, biologically we are born to be either a female or a male, but it's actually in the process of being proved that transgender people actually have the brain of the opposite sex e.g. a biological female who is transgender will have a female body and a male brain, and therefore as they grow up, they realise that their body doesn't match their thoughts and who they are inside.

    • There are no male or female brains. It's all in your head.

      • Very punny

But seriously though, the male brain is very different from the female brain, in terms of overall size and the size of the frontal cortex etc. It really does have a huge effect. There is a study in the Netherlands at the moment about the brains of transgender people.
