Is it normal for me to not have a car at age 20?

When I was 14 I was dealing with a lot of mental issues. My grandparents put me in a mental hospital so I never got the chance to grow up, get a job and save up for a car. Is it normal to not have a car at 20?

Is It Normal?

  • I don't have a car and I'm 21 but it's because I don't have the money for it right now.

  • here in europe alot of people in their early 20's don't have a car my bro is 21 and doesn't have his license maybe it's because everything here is smaller so we just take public transportation

  • It just depends. I got one when I started college mainly for school and work. Not gonna, its not that much fun spending over $150 a month on gas. Be glad you don't have one.

  • It may be a set back on your own personal plan but lot's of people age 20 - probably most of them - don't have a car for a lot of reasons like cost, interest and need.

  • I'm 21 and I don't even have my license, I already failed the road test 3 times and in 2 different states... I didn't start driving until I was 19 though, cos I was something of agoraphobic. I hate driving, but I have to cos everything's too far to walk/bike. Even riding in a car as a passenger makes me nervous... anyway I think it's normal given your situation, hopefully you feel better now, and able to get a job and all that

  • I think that you revealed too much information about yourself. Maybe the weird part in all this is the fact you were in a mental hospital not the fact that you don't have a car

  • Yes totally normal, because everyone I see in a car is 100% perfectly sane with no mental issues whatsoever.

  • If it makes you feel any better, I have a car, which I wrecked back in June. I paid over $600 to get the axels re-aligned so it could still be drivable, but the huge dents are still there. It looks like a wrinkled piece of paper on the front right side. I don't have the money to spare for a new car right now, so I have to keep driving this car with these embarrassing dents. When you do get a car, at least it won't be like mine. Keep it that way too.

  • It's normal. I'm 21 tomorrow and I have a car but a lot of my friends don't. I couldn't fit my schedule around the bus system (get off school at 8:20, be at work by 9:45), but most 20 year olds don't do what I do. In addition, my work schedule and location is subject to change at any time and the busses here don't run from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. I usually work nights.

If you don't have a need for a car, it's not worth the trouble, money and effort. Trust me.

  • I'm 28, never had a car or a license. Don't really want either of them.

  • Of course it's normal. It is for me anyway. I highly doubt I'll have a car at that age. My dad's 53 and he's never owned a car. Neither has my mam. So, 20 seems very young to me.:P
