He probably saw it as an investment, something that had to be bought eventually, why not now? Maybe there was a deal.
It's understandable to be frustrated, have him come up with a way to limit spending or replenish that loss over the next few weeks to make up for it.
Is it normal for him to just spend money without consulting me?
