It's normal for them not to want to go out with someone taller than them, but that guy was just a major jerk to you and his response was not normal. I wouldn't hit on a girl taller than me (5'8") but if a taller, attractive girl, asked me out for coffee, I would accept her offer in a second. I think (for the most part) girls taller than myself are not attracted to guys shorter than them, so that's why I don't ask them out. I leave it up to the taller girls to come to me.
