Is it normal for an atheist to want to promote tolerance of Islam?

  • Quranists abide generally by only what is in the Qu'ran. They are a school of thought, although in no way as significant as Sunni and Shia Islam.

But my point was really that it's unfair to entirely dismiss somebody's declaration of admiration for a religion based on some bizarre and violent aspects of it. Just as kelili should be aware of some of the horrors of Islamic scripture, you should be aware of some of the positive aspects.

Furthermore, whilst whatchamakalit is wrong to assert that stoning is entirely outside of the sphere of religion, it's wrong to assert that it isn't also a cultural practice; like you say, Christians and Jews aren't stoning people despite what is included in their base and supporting texts, yet Muslims are. Which suggests it's cultural pressure to adhere to certain rules laid forth in the hadiths, rather than Islam itself being more supportive of stoning and lashing and all the other nasty forms of punishment and torture than The Bible and The Torah.

Anyway, I am not defending all Muslims, just those more moderate and peaceful Muslims. I think the Islamic world will gradually shift as international influence grows and we'll hopefully have an Islam of tolerance that can outshine and overshadow the current widespread Islam of intolerance we've come to know.
