Astrology is a lot more complex when you really look into it that simple sun signs make it seem like it is. The "compatibility" things mean next to nothing.
It is said that I, as a Sagittarius, am most compatible with Gemini. This is untrue, as, although I am most compatible with Air and Fire signs, Geminis and I have always had very good, yet somehow emotionally distant, relationships. I am actually most compatible with Leo, followed by Aquarius and Capricorn (I having had better relationships with Aquarius and more relationships with Capricorn). My moon sign is Scorpio and my sun sign is Sagittarius - the occult and the emotional in conjunction with the hedonistic, friendly and knowledge loving... it only makes sense that I would go for the rebellious and fun (Aquarius), the noble (Leo) or the hard-working and stable (Capricorn). I am also a Pisces ascendant, which explains why many people see me as imaginative, intelligent and emotionally "deep" (Pisces = Neptune = NeuroNeptunian!).

This is a great website to go to to delve further into Astrology. I would recommend you do a birth chart. It will greatly increase your own understanding of your astronomical make-up and maybe answer a lot of questions you have been having.
Do I believe in Astrology? No. But I do find it fun.
