Man, you just need to loosen up a bit, do what you want without thoughts of taboo or common conduct. It's fine to not dig the music of your peers, if anything it is better, as pop music is an industry, not art, and even what isn't custom built to sell is still generally fad, and of little quality. However music itself cannot be brushed aside, it is personally my greatest muse, and should - like most things - be explored and appreciated. What you really need to do is examine your motives and priorities. I have known manny people who denny themselves all the pleasures of life on the promise that one day they will retire rich, and be happy. But what is that? 25% of your life being taught to work, 50% working and 25% rotting and reminiscing on their waisted youth as their savings ebb away on care costs and christmas preasents for kids they cant even remember the name of. Why not say (loudly, with more or less this wording) "fuck it, I'm gonna get high and listen to Santana!" there are countless painful cliché phrases ("live life in the now!", "life's to be lived, not to arrange") that say much the same, but like many clichés we don't actually think about what they meen. What you have to do is bassicaly reassess your values and their merits. Tradition and Puritan/Victorian values have held our society back from great wonders, and what do they offer in return? Bowler hats. Not that they aren't apreciated, but it isn't quite a fair trade. And you have to stop looking down on people who are... Well just less anal, to be frank. If something is to no one's detriment, it is not wrong, and if it cheers people up on balence it's good. Wear what you like, listen to what you like, fuck what you like (if it is willing, I might add), drink what you like etc. just don't do things just because they are 'proper', because that is exactly the same thing that you are looking down on people for doing: doing what is expected of them by society. You just happen to have been reading to much P.G.Woodhouse or something when growing up. If you are really happy with this life of ebony tower anality then fair play to you, but I doubt it, you probably just need to get laid.
