I think it all depends on his situation with his ex, how long they were together, if kids were involved, how they ended etc. Although I have never done it some people can stay friends with their ex, very good friends infact.
He really needs to approach you first about advice etc before going to anyone else, especially his ex. I think you need to stress how uncomfortable it makes you feel. It sounds like quite a new relationship to me so maybe give it time and he'll feel comfortable enough to come to your first.
