i am 70 years old. I had 2 sons and lost my husband when they were 5 and 7 old.had to disciplane them, but i never did hurt them. When disobeyed i used to call my mother (their grandmother) to come to my home and do the punishment together. she would undress them and just two spanks on their bottom and send them to their room naked so they won't go out that day. It worked well and they were never hurt. 40 years ago most moms did this to their sons
