Is it "normal" for a man to get an erection on the first date?

When I typed the word "normal" in this instance, I really meant "typical."

Last night, I went on date number 1 with a 26-year-old man [I am 23] who I have been talking to/texting for close to 2 months now, but mostly texting.

While we were watching the new movie "In Time", he got an erection.

We did kiss quite a bit, even during the film, so I'd be willing to bet that that had something to do with it.

However, I've read that a man can get a boner for a woman regardless of whether or not he's attracted to her.

I just wonder if this guy's only interested in sex; I don't wish to be used.

Also, let me add that he's French.

Keeping this fact in mind, I am curious to know if the culture is different over there.

Are [some] men in France perhaps less apt to take things slow or are they more aggressive?

Is my situation "normal" or not?

    It's difficult to read this and not question this questioner. She goes to a movie, makes out with the guy and seems disappointed that she made him excited. What's so great about impotence? If he did not get aroused she'd be writing to learn if THAT were normal.

    I think perhaps you're over-thinking his erection.

    Yes a man can be aroused even if he's not in love.
    He can even be aroused just because his body reacted to an increased blood flow or vibrations on his body (i.e. say a car ride).

    What does this mean about his intentions with you? Absolutely nothing.

    What matters more ISN'T whether or not his flesh thickened with desire but what he DID about it.

    You're making out with him on the first date and then you're surprised that he gets aroused and think he's only interested in sex because of that?
