Since you've taken interest in the specimen, you should at least make contact with it and learn its way through communication. Ultimately you will learn why this being has chosen to be what it has become. Befriend it and help it become a person, teach it the norms and values of the social structure and any other conventional ways of life one needs to progress in its lifespan of normality. Boost its morale and the payoff will help both of you, the probability of smell will cease, unless of course the organism is defective and in need of medical repair, and you will undoubtedly feel better or at least be able to brag to the locals about how to tamed the foul beast and it will transcend its ways into a happier lifestyle. All it takes is a push
I do think that you should talk to him though. Maybe there is something wrong. Wearing the same clothes all the time and having bashed up knuckles aren't exactly what one would call normal. On the other hand, it could always turn out that he just doesn't give a damn about how other people see him and think of his habits, but talking to him won't hurt. As you said, he's an alright guy.
Oh, and when I say talk, I don't mean just going up to him say "uh dude..why do you wear the same clothes all of the time and smell and have bruised up hands?" Just get to know him better and gradually get to find out more.
is it normal for a guy to wear the same clothes everyday and smell?
