Forget about him! It sounds to me as if he was on the rebound and using you to fill some void in his life. If anything he sounds like a very manipulative person, and I'd be inclined to believe that your friend was right about him. Don't risk your friendship with this other chick for this controlling, manipulative user of a guy. Stop dwelling on his stupid pity parties, and feeling sorry for him, and then you'll feel better.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying he isn't depressed and even suicidal, but mental illness is not an excuse to use, control and manipulate other people. Plenty of depressed and suicidal people are master manipulators!
