Does his girlfriend know he's hanging out with you? If he's lying to his girlfriend and telling her he's working or studying or something, then I doubt he's on the level.
Also, have you met his girlfriend? If you tell him you'd like to meet her and he doesn't want you to meet her, it's probably not on the level.
