Just approach this guy, try to make some casual conversation (this is more or less a test to see whether you can handle talking during the homecoming should he agree), ask if he has a date and if he doesn't say something on the lines of "Want to go together?"
The key point is not to overdo it. If you don't try to be extravagant, then the chances of you appearing awkward plummet dramatically.
