Is it normal for a female to be losing so much hair?

I'm a female, I'm only 19 and I notice that everytime I shower or brush my hair, I lose about a hundred strands of hair. For the record I have very thick, wavy, long hair. It's coloured but still really healthy and not brittle, and no one in my family has a history of hair lose... at all... ever... even when they're old. I don't know if most girls lose this much hair, but everytime I run my fingers through it I always get a bunch of loose strands. Lots of hairs on my clothes too, like near my shoulders and upper back, and I wonder if people notice that sort of thing. So is it normal?

  • My cousin is a hairdresser, and when I asked him about this for myself, he told me that we have SO many follicles, and it may seem like we're losing a lot of hair in the shower, etc, but it's really not even a drop in the bucket.

  • I lose a bunch when I shower or brush my hair, I'm a 20yr old female, but if it's more than you've always lost, check your diet. If your diet has changed then it's probably directly related. It happened to my friend her first year of college, and she has really thick hair. It turned out to be her diet. The school food just wasn't cutting it. As long as you aren't noticing bald patchs or anything too crazy, don't worry. But it wouldn't hurt to take a multivitamin everyday ;)

  • What's your diet like? Do you eat enough protein and drink enough water?

  • I have the same problem. Course it didn't used to be as bad as it is now, but it got worse once I permed my hair way back in 7th grade. Ever since then my hair falls out a lot. I shed everywhere it's quite aggravating really.

  • I know you're gonna hate me for this, but 9/10 times a girl has hair that's falling out its a condition OR its from overdying. I work at a hair salon and know quite a bit about hair.

You may think its not from the dye, but It seems more likely. There are several conditions that can cause this as well.
