Is it normal for a 20 yearold to have no motivation in life?

Is it normal for a 20 year-old to never had a job, who still lives with his parents, has never had a girlfriend, and doesn't have a driver's license?

I've never had any of these things. I have a difficult time talking to strangers; I constantly stutter around people I've met for the first time. I also tend to avoid large crowds of people. Yet, I'm intelligent, relatively in good physical shape, still maintain close friendships, and hang out with friends on a regular basis.

But lately I've been satisfied with just being lazy and doing nothing. And when I actually plan on applying for a job and getting my license, I procrastinate. Should I go see counseling?

Is It Normal?

  • You are still young and have time to figure out what you want to do with your life. However, do not waste your 20's and save all the important, serious stuff for your 30's. I recently watched a TedTalks lecture about this. Since people are living longer, they think they can goof off all throughout their 20's but it is one of the most important decades in your life. 85% of all life changing events occur before the time you are 35.

  • I have a friend like you. Doesn't have a gf, job or drive and he's 20. And I'm pretty lazy but I go to school, work part time and got my license when I was 17 but I could see how under the right circumstances I could just sit around like on my ass and do nothing. In fact there are times in the year where I pretty just do that. People kinda suck ass anyway. I'd say your normal.

  • Definitely get a driver's license and then start looking for a job. You still have time but it's running out. Maybe after those two things are accomplished you can start looking for a girlfriend and start a life.

  • Yes, good idea about seeing a counselor. Of course this doesn't have to be the "high dollar" type. There are very good people either in a college or church. You need something in your life to light your fire. You are probably too young to realize this, but we all have only one chance here.
How about taking a few night classes to get you started. By all means, get your drivers license. (Some day you might need it)

  • I feel the same way sometimes. Sometimes i just get depressed because i don't get anything done. But my advice is that you find something positive and productive to do because once you start doing it, you feel really positive and for me, i feel so much better after doing something that i busted my ass doing. I feel like shit when i sit on my ass all day. So my word of advice is get up and do something! Look for a job for a start and then move up from there. Set goals for yourself and tackle them along the way! :)

  • Its normal I think maybe you're just lost need a little direction in your life some people tend to get in a slump after high school or college not sure what to do career wise however I think you should try to get a drivers license that's your first step to independence

  • You've got some time to figure out what to do with your life, but you're still way behind the curve. You obviously realize there's a bit of a problem, or else you wouldn't be asking. If you're unhappy, then change your life. If you don't know how to do that, then maybe you should talk to a counselor.
