Why not? Every 15 year old gets severe crushes on girls and as most are awkward and uncomfortable around them, it's a lot easier to fantasize about someone they don't know than try to imagine some stuck up schoolmate suddenly taking them into their arms and loving them.
Seems the answer to the bullying is to keep his passions to himself; what the assholes don't know......
