Is it normal for a 12 year old girl to sleep in bed with her father?

My parents are divorced and are co-parenting my sister. I was quite shocked to learn that my sister still sleeps in bed with her father occasionally. She is 12 and he is a 40 year old male. In addition, he has a wife now, but on that occasion she sleeps in another bed in another room. Is this normal?

I don't see a problem with it. Sounds like he doesn't get to see her/live with her so from time to time she'll sleep with her Dad. The step mom understands enough to go into another room and let his kid sleep with him. Not really sure what age would make it not normal, but that's his child and always will be.

Thank you for your input. I'd disagree with the argument of 'that's his child'. His child or not, whether it's bad for her personal development or not doesn't matter whether that's the case. For me personally I'd say it's debatable, but I'd draw the line definitely at 14. If she's 16 then it's still his child, but that doesn't mean that it isn't really damn weird.

Just because they are sleeping in the same bed doesn't mean that they're having sex with eachother. Let's clarify that.

If they are having sex together, that's illegal as it's both paedophilia and incest all in one.

If not, it's perfectly acceptable and normal for a child to sleep with their parent, for comfort only.

A couple people here seem to think I'm alluding to paedophilia or something, but I'm mainly referring to her personal development. Thanks for clearing that up though lol.

maybe she is afraid of the dark and he wants her to feel safe.

Could be, strange that she isn't afraid of the dark when she's here then.

    Nope nope nope not normal.

I have a friend who is 16 and sleeps with her dad when its just the both of them home alone and her step mom who is his new gf is only 19 and you could tell her dad is sick in the head for going out with young girls I find it obvious that hes doing something he shouldn't .

Is it not normal because of the friend you have? Not everyone lives a family life like them.

I dunno, it can be fine. Some kids and parents are comfortable with it still at that age.

  • Nothing at all wrong with it! It's only a problem for those that WANT to see a problem with it!

When I was around that age I might have watched a scary movie and felt safer sleeping next to my Dad because I was scared, I don't know if it's normal in the sense of is it a social norm or not, but there is nothing wrong with it. I don't think you should make something innocent seem sinister.

Isn't that kind of the irony here? I'm simply whether its normal or not and I'm alluding to personal development (which you couldn't know), but if you're the one to think about sinister happenings simply for asking such a question then maybe you think it may have sinister implications after all.

Some older kids sleep with their parents for comfort, or because they're scared of something that has to do with sleeping alone. For example, your sister might be afraid of the dark.

Even though this sounds pretty nasty to me, as long as your father isn't doing anything to your sister, it's normal.

As long as it doesn't continue past 13 or so. Once she hits puberty, it could inadvertently become a problem. At the least, it's a poor choice for him since men often get morning wood or he might cuddle with her on accident in the middle of the night. It's not bad that they sleep in the same bed on the surface, it's just that it could end up being bad on accident.

Of course, as long as there's no abuse or symptoms of abuse, I guess there's still not enough to say it's "bad". She will have to learn to sleep on her own, though. I believe I slept in the same bed as my mom here and there when I was young but I was also 9, maybe 10. 12 years old for a female with her father is kind of on a different plane.

Thank you, very sensible answer. He's a very narcissistic person and has a lot of problem mentally. I'm not just throwing that out there to demoralise him, trust me I know. But he's definitely not a paedophile (I think). I agree with you there has to be a line at some point right? Let's imagine he's not that kind of person and she's 17... then it's just bad for her personal development at some point and it does become a bit weird regardless I think at some stage but that's just my opinion.

Make her stop...there is a limit and a line that does not need to be crossed at a certain age.. and she is past that age..it is not healthy for her..and it is sick of him to want her there..sorry but it is true..young girls should never do such things..nor crawl all over men even if it is a family member.. you got to teach her the difference between right and wrong..

I thought the same, but maybe I'm wrong that's why I'm asking. I'm not insinuating that he is a dirty person by the way but simply for her personal development.

  • Its not a big deal unless you have some reason to think she's being abused, which you didn't mention in your post. Otherwise, Sounds normal to me.

Maybe he wants to make her feel secure, or wants to bond with her? Not every man who loves his daughter is a molester. Grow up.

Are they Irish? If so, it is normal. Unlike humans, rodents reproduce with relatives quite often.

Trolls have no life and you are really showing the net and yourself what a boring and pathetic life you have by posting this shot. Really. Lose your virginity or quit fucking your mother and get a life. Fuck.

The 12 year old should sleep in the other bed in the other room if that is an option.

This is not by any means ok in my book I have a 8 year old and I would not let her sleep in my bed with my husband it is more creepy that he has his wife leaving the room she needs to sleep in her own bed the father should know better and his wife shouldn’t be ok with this unhealthy . Behavior if the child is sick had a bed dream it is then that is a little different

It is icky and NOT normal at all. Repulsive. Most girls here are well into puberty by 12 as it is. Something really wrong about this.

Yeah she had her period already so that's kind of weird right. She's not specifically afraid of the dark but it seems better for her personal development as well.
