Is it normal biting the dog back?

My boyfriend and I are getting a second dog, and my boyfriend is convinced that “biting back” is the way to go for aggression training.

Our first dog bit me once 2 years ago when I was trying to take a chicken bone away from her, and my bf bit her ear quickly after. She has never bitten aggressively (she mouths during play all the time) since so he considers that a success. I think the bite was very out of the blue so that is why it never happened again.

I guess it is considered fair, but I think it is just silly :/ he plans to do the same thing if the new puppy grows up and ever gets aggressive. Obviously we would never physically discipline a puppy, we know they play that way, and my bf wrestles now with our current dog and he understands play.

The only time we have ever physically disciplined our dog was the one bite after she bit out of anger. Thoughts?

Is It Normal?

  • I guess you could say that your man comes from a "Dog Eat Dog World".

  • Great. More idiots who shouldn't own pets.

  • Does the boyfriend bark and growl at the dog too? If not he doesn't seem fully involved and I would question his commitment level with both you and the dog going forward.

  • You shouldn't do any training without professional advice.

    • Coexisting and bonding with a dog doesn’t involve a degree.

  • Totally normal, when my dog bites me, I bite him back on his neck or his ear. He’ll grow up aggressive towards you. My dog hates me, but loves all my family members.

    • What? You say it is something you do, and normal, but then say it has only negative effects????

        • Biting a dog will only make him bite you again and increase the chances of him attacking you. If you want a gentle dog, you got to treat it gently. If your dog is already aggressive due to either you or a previous owner mistreating him, it's usually too late to try and make him gentle. For a gentle dog, you need to raise it gently from a puppy. But if you're wanting a dog who's rough, that's up to you though.

  • It's a bad idea, as harm could come to both parties.

  • No not normal, dogs bites on instincts, for guarding something or protecting themselves. humans are meant to be more rational...

  • It is extremely bad to bother a dog while it eats.. it's normal reaction for them to bite if you steal their food..also it's bad to give them chicken bones..what kinda dog trainers are you?

    • That is why I was taking it. It fell on the floor from fried chicken.

      • You did the right thing, depending on the breed. I did this to my pit bull the first time he nipped at me and it startled him so much. He never nipped at anyone from that point on. He would start to and then look at me and stop. Should I have done it? Who knows, there are better ways to train, for sure...but sometimes what works, works. Dogs bite each other, and you are the alpha (or, you should be..) In your dog's pack. What would an alpha dog in a wild pack, do if an inferior bit him while he was clearly performing a deliberate action?? Chomp chomp.

    • It is not bad to bother a dog when it eats. This is literally the first test they give incoming dogs at shelters to see if they are aggressive or not. You are not well informed.

  • pretending to be a dog and biting one is mentally sick. Owning and placing an animal in captivity just so it can survive its captivity is also sick. do whatever the fuck you want with them. The bible tells us you have dominion over all animals , it didnt say you had to earn the right.

  • You don't bite any pet. No reason for that.

  • I tried a similar thing to this once with a friend’s pug - every time it bit me, I’d fuck it. Seemed to do the trick
