Well, it is considered 'normal' because vast amounts of people do it whether conscious or not. I personally started doing it as a child, and I have been doing it once a month for over 20 years. I keep on telling myself to stop because usually I'll pick for hours at a time, having bled out by the capsule loads, and the next 2 weeks my tongue feels so unbearable that I feel like committing suicide just to relieve the pain, however I sacrifice 2 weeks of pain for just a few minutes/hours of small and somewhat satisfying stimulative pain when picking. I do it with my teeth, and sometimes even with a pinhead. It's been so bad that I ripped a crater in my tongue almost leaving a snake-like shape, it has healed since then. Each person does it for different reasons, anxiety is a leading cause, which is again why it is considered normal as it is a popular impulsive action, much like consorting to binge eating when upset. I do it because I find enjoyment in the feeling, and the focus, it keeps me occupied.
This is the wrong place to ask, it's a VERY biased page. If someone doesn't do it or heard of it before, they'll consider it not normal without the proper research.
Is it normal biting off small pieces of my tongue?
