Male friends of mine would often give me money to queue at the bar for a drink for myself if they were heading to the bathroom. Otherwise they buy it when I arrive into the bar.
I don't see it as anything only good manners - especially if he knows you haven't eaten, he may have assumed it was coz you had no money.
