I think it's more common nowadays, we live in a world that is a lot less touchy feely than it was a few years ago especially with computers and the gradual disintegration of the family unit. It isn't normal though, as in it's not in human nature to be so isolating. We are affectionate creatures who normally desire to feel loved physically (nothing dirty here!). I can understand why your mum was upset because she needs this affection from you.
It doesn't mean there's anything serious wrong with you, many people feel like you do. But you could benefit from some professional guidance if it's upsetting you and your mum so much.
