The ones I played with were made from a kind of acrylic plastic (they were hollow). They weighed no more than plastic garden furniture. I think they had some kind of pattern printed on them to make the white pieces look like ivory and the black pieces ebony.
I was only about nine and the king was bigger than I was. It was like being a chess piece myself. I loved it. Turns out nobody was in charge of it. The local authority had just put it there for people to enjoy. Nobody monitored it or charged for it and nobody stole any of the pieces or vandalised it. I guess you can't do stuff like that any more. :/
Is it normal? I don't know why, but...
