Is it nature vs or is it nurture?

I am good friends with a pair of identical twins. They are males. One is gay and one is straight. This really makes me wonder if it really is nature who decides your sexuality. What do you think????

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • Both have some sort of impact. Nobody knows what determines sexuality, so who knows either way?

  • It almost doesn't even matter. Environmental factors that affect the mind on a purely psychological basis can actually begin altering the basic structure of the mind itself. I am convinced of this. It's tempting to say that there are two types of homosexuals: Those that have hormonal issues, and those that have been affected by a complex conditioning process, and thet may be true to an extent, but in the end, they end up just about the same. The mind is very powerful.

  • You don't choose who you are attracted to sexually. It just happens.

If everyone could just stop and think for one moment, when did you decide who you were attracted to? You'll find you didn't decide, it just happened. It's not something you can control.

I do believe that environmental factors can influence attraction, but not on a base level.

  • Both have an impact on a persons' behaviour, but I think that nature is more dominant.

  • You are born gay, straight, bi.... You could be brought up in the most anti homosexual home and become Gay/Bi... You could be brought up in a Homosexual home and be straight. Its your own mind that determines your sexuality not the home or people you live in/with or who brought you up :)

  • it's more of a mixture of the two :) if youre really interested you should look into psychological approaches towards sexuality and gender identity... fun!!! :D

  • I think everyone chooses their sexuality later in life.

  • Nurture doesnt just mean how your parents raised you. Friends, other family members, teachers and peers have a big influence on you as well/

  • Nature is the God

  • Even identical twins have some variation in genes. Nature would be much more likely. Especially because I assume they were raised in the same household because you know both. The nurture would have likely been the same.

    • Twins have the exact same genotype and so their DNA would be indistinguishable from one another.

    • Thats also not true. Even with twins they see the world and experience the world differently even if they are raised together.

    • Even if they were brought up in the same household they can have very different life changing experiences. For example the friends they associate themselves with, traumatic experiences such as rape or bullying can happen to one and not the other, their personalities can be different and that would affect how people treat them etc.

      • Besides, their DNA is identical, unlike you commented!
