Is it immoral/unethical to buy something you suspect might be stolen?

ALSO

Is it immoral/unethical to buy something super valuable from someone for super cheap because they are unaware that it is super valuable?

    • What if you're just suspicious it was stolen but not certain?

Like lets say you go to meet up with a craigslist (like gumtree) seller who is selling 2k worth of woman's jewelry for 500, you arrive and it's like a punky male teen, you suspect it could be stolen, do you ask questions? do you just buy it? I mean you're not taking part in theft and you certainly don't want to accuse a potential seller of theft and make the deal awkward... what do you do?

I would buy it and sell it later

Good question! Its a gray area. But what I would do if you suspect its stolen, is buy it anyways. That way you could make the case that you weren't sure, and just aired on the side of a good deal. If you passed the deal up, its possible it was not stolen and you missed out. If the staus is uncertain, nobody could blame you for taking the deal. If people thought the other way, then everybody would just question eachother more. But unless you know for sure its stolen, I would buy it. The blame then falls on the seller for not disclosing that its stolen.

        • ya, it's a difficult spot to be in, because I suppose how high can your "suspicion" get before you're absolutely sure it was stolen, like where does the line fall. Because I mean really you could be 99% sure something was stolen but still call it suspicion because you have no absolute proof. but is it then the duty of the buyer to find out for sure I wonder, both morally and legally..

I could not tell you where the line is, but when in doubt, buy it.

A poll would be quite the helpful addition to this post.

        • I had it as a poll, but it was confusing with two questions at once, plus I'm not really looking for just yes and no answers, and ya know... i know you dig your polls and all but reading and writing is ok too right?

I wouldnt do it. My father did that in the past and had to give back the stolen item. It was a complete waste of money.

If the item is later found to be stolen.
It will be taken from you.
    Returned to legal owner.
    Youll be questioned at length.
At the least youll be free to go, but youll also be minus whatever you paid for it.
Just avoid crackheads and their stolen property.
If your conscience gives you a red flag!!!
Its trying to tell you something.
