Is it ever ok to hit your mother?

I grew up in the South and the sentiment was always "never strike your mother no matter what!" but what about if she starts hitting you first? What if she's the one to initiate the violence first and you either are reacting in self-defense or giving back what she gave you?

I have a rule you hit me you get a warning. But if you are big enough to hit me again you get hit back at the same amount of force. I don't care who you are. There are consequences to using violence. I have seen to many guys get beaten, and in the case of my brother, strangled by women who depended on the "you can't hit me" rule. And I've been kicked in the balls by girls who depended on the same rule.

Rarely if ever have I been in that position before, but if I were I and couldn't leave or walk away from the situation I'd give them the one strike rule too.

If you know your Mom is violent and know you're pushing her buttons the best thing to do is leave or even call the police once in a safe place. You hit her and all bets are off.

Remember sometimes people do get stressed and lash out not meaning it. If your Mom has never hit you and she suddenly gave you a bitch slap, so be it. If she's all out punching you in the face and going off she needs to know that's not ok to do. I'd say have her arrested before punching her back.

Sameness is not the same as fairness.

Yes it is. So your saying women should just get to inflict violence on anyone and they get a free pass?

    Nah, don't hit your mom.

I was in that situation, and I could have knocked her old ass out, but I didn't. Instead I moved out the next day to our grandmother's (5 states away) and that hurt her more than any punch to the face could. After that, she never laid a finger on me.

      This is good advice

  • I wouldn't think any less of a person who hit somebody who assaulted them first.

That being said, it wouldn't sit right with me, personally, to strike my own mother even if she did hit me.

If youre an adult and your mom hits you time to move out. If youre a kid if shes trying to really harm you, push her out of the way and leave. And call and report her. Parents shouldnt abuse kids and kids shouldnt abuse parents neither is ok.

Self defence should be about stopping the other person from hitting you more than hitting them back. Ideally, it's to restrain them. Of course, ideals don't always pan out.

There is nothing wrong with defending oneself.

It is never normal to hit anyone...your mother brought you in this world at least respect her for that...if nothing else.. keep your hands to yourself..if you have hit her.. then you need to say you are sorry and that you do not understand why you have that anger inside you...you must control yourself..no one can do that for you..walk away.. get gone.. do something other than hit..

my mum used to hit me growing up. one day i was in a particularly bad mood and when she came at me i pushed her off me and she fell back and hit her head and hurt herself pretty bad. I never forgave myself for it and I'll never lay a hand on a woman again
even if one is attacking me I will just take it it's not worth a lifetime of guilt

No, but it is O.K. to call the cops on her. Assault is a crime. But you don't specify how bad it is, so it's not really possible to give you a good answer.

Just because you can hit her back doesn't mean you should.

I'm practically twice my mom's size, she's short and insanely petite. I'd have no problem restraining her. I can't really fathom a situation where I'd need to hit her. I mean, if such a situation raised I guess I would if I had to but only as a last resort. You gotta do what you gotta do whether it's your mom or whoever, but self-defense doesn't mean using more force than necessary.

Self defense is never wrong. If it gets to the point where you have to hit back, so be it.

Self defense is a basic right, against anyone. I wouldn't advocate unnecessary force or violence though

If anyone hits you first then you should be able to hit them back to defend yourself. But if I were you I still wouldn't since there is still the archaic sexist view in society that if a woman hits a man she's just being a bit feisty, but if a man hits a woman then he's a scumbag who needs to be locked up, regardless of the situation for either. Plus if you hit her, she might fall and bang her head off of something and do some serious damage.

Can you just block her? Your post triggers bad memories of my teen years.

Don’t hit her no matter what! You should love her! One day she won’t be there and you will feel like disaster just stoke and there’s nothing you can do. Love her don’t hit her!
