Is it creepy to be friends with someone a decade younger?

I'm 28F and I met a 17F in a college class we're taking together. Even though she's 17, she's got the maturity of friends and people I know who are my age and up.

When I was younger, I had much older friends and thought nothing of it, but now that I'm the old one, I feel uncomfortable about the age gap, especially since she's not even 20 yet. I don't wanna be that weird, creepy old person that makes others suspicious, ya know?

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

This is double-standards as fuck, but since you both are female, it's okay in the public eye. Many people will probably assume she's your sister, adopted sister, cousins, friends, etc. Same goes if you both were male with the same age difference (brothers, etc). Oddly enough, if the younger girl were male, and you still female, it would still seem innocent (younger brother, cousin, etc).

However, if you were male, and your friend remains female, then you would be getting some disapproving looks, especially if she looks much younger than 17; because people think you're trying to befriend this girl for wrong reasons, even though it's not like that. Luckily, you're female, so you don't have to deal with that struggle.

Bottom line is, you shouldn't give a shit about what other people think.

Of course it's not creepy. You be friends with who you like. People waste far too much of their time worrying about what other people think.

It's not creepy, unless you're being creepy, which I rather doubt in your situation.

  • Very normal. I had older friends when I was a teen, even now. I have both younger and older friends.

It's not creepy. I have friends with that age diff. But it probably just feels weird because you're the older one.
Don't worry about it, cos sometimes overthinking these things actually makes them become an issue.

I'm old, so all my friends are younger. People my age usually bore me.

she isn't going to college to meet friends , she is going to make grades. leave her the fuck alone. why the hell are you going to college at age 28? you picking up another degree taking classes with a 17 year old? not likely. I picked up a 3rd degree at age 40 without "making friends" so can you.

All my adult life I've had friends from teenage to octagenarian. It's normal and healthy. Friendship is things in common (being human!) not how far down the path you are.
