Is is normal that i get a strange but pleasant sensation that washes

Sorry, I was responding to a posting I saw yesterday about an experience that occurs under a very specific set of circumstances. When I observe someone focused on an activity that requires them to perform some kind of manual dexterity, like drawing, or coloring or packaging something in a box or the similar, I get a strange tingling sensation that washes over me. It starts at the top of my head and moves through my body, it calms me, it feels good, almost therapeutic and while its happening I let go of all other thoughts or feelings. Its almost like meditating. I discovered that other people have experienced this too under exactly the same set of circumstances and we have all wondered if we alone experience this. I want to know if there is a common denominator between us (my brother and I) and everyone else who experiences this too.

  • I've been getting that feeling since I was young (about 7y/o). I've never heard anyone talk about it before and I've always wondered! I get it watching similar activities but generally it's when people are using their hands - not everyone though, but I do find that certain people elicit it more than others... No idea what it is though!

    • Well, I have a similar feeling when i watch people cleaning something. I mean, tires, windows, that kind of things. That makes me feel it.
I need to concentrate a little and then i feel a tingling in my head that becomes bigger and if it continues, it can go all over my body. It feels really good, like watching a massage.

I always ask people if they felt something like this before, but never found anyone ... until now :).

I've recently been searching youtube videos related to this to relax my head, lol.

Feeling this since i was young, too :)

    • I looked into it more, apparently its called ASMR, or Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response and some people are attempting to get money together for research, but everytime I have tried to reach them I have never received a single response. Weird

  • When someone is cleaning the windshield of the car while I'm sitting in it, I get the very same feeling. I don't want them to stop!

  • I know exactly what you mean. I love watching someone draw or sculpt and I get a profound feeling of calm. It is comparable to being touched/given a massage. I don't understand where the feeling comes from though

  • Most people won't understand what you're talking about, but I think what you're experiencing is something of a concentrative state that is blissful. It is experienced by meditators, but also people in the "zone", joggers, athletes etc...

It's non-dualistic state, where your conceptual thoughts do not dominate your primary consciousness.

Is good, bad, normal? Let's say it's nothing to be stuck on, or try to fixate on. If it arises from being more mindful, then that's good, because it will benefit you and others.

    • I as well get that feeling when I watch people clean windows, vacuum floors, stuff like that. Or on a guided tour of some place where you just follow along like a child. It's a cool feeling. I am 40 and in Colorado, and it's been with me for a long time, a very Zen-like feeling.

  • Yes, I completely understand the feeling and I've told a few people in my life and no one has experienced it. I have gotten it since I was little. my first memories of it where when a child would brush my hair. I get it mostly when someone is doing their job, like offering me a sample of food, or sometimes if I'm talking to a customer service rep on the phone. It's almost always when someone is doing a some kind of service. to me it seems like it's only when people are "in the moment" and maybe focused on what they are doing. it's weird because it seems to happen more with foreign people, but happens with American people too. it doesn't happen when people seem frustrated and like they hate their job. it's like when they do something in a child-like manner. not child-ish, but as if they were a child playing the game of cashier or whatever they are doing. most of the posts I've read explain it as a sensation in their head or scalp but mine washes over my whole body and its concentrated in my mid section and sort of lower, but not sexual in any way. it's so weird, but it's so relaxing. I've been experiencing it more often lately.

  • I have ran at times a much as 10 miles a day or more and experienced the 'runners high' or endorphine release that comes from this type of activity. Its great and even comparable in terms of how pleasant it is, however, its not the same thing, or at least it doesnt feel exactly the same. Thanks for your feedback
