Is feminism necessary?

Is feminism necessary?

Also, I want to point out that this is in the US (and similar countries) ONLY. I am not talking about third world countries where women can't even show their faces.

I personally think that feminism is unnecessary in this day and age. Women can do anything that men can do. They can vote, they can work any job that they want, they can run for office, they can do sports, etc. There are a few things that women can't do that men can, such as walk around outside without a shirt on. Although I really don't think many women would want to do that anyway lol. That being said, men get screwed over in a lot of cases as well.

One example of women actually having more rights than men is when it comes to abortion. The women can abort the child and the father's input is irrelevant. It is the man's child too. Shouldn't he have a say in whether or not the abortion can happen? There are plenty of cases where the man really wants the kid and is willing to take care of it entirely, but the women just doesn't want to give birth so she just decided to get an abortion anyway. Isn't that unfair? A man should have a right to his child, should he not?

Another example is just how society views them. Women may feel like society forces them to be skinny, but men are expected to not only be muscular, but also tall and able to hold a good job. You've heard of a deadbeat dad, but never a deadbeat mom. Why? Because women aren't expected to make money the way that men are. If the husband is jobless he is shamed for it, but if the wife is jobless it isn't considered to be a big deal.

In domestic violence cases women are at an advantage as well. Most of the time if I man hits a woman and a woman hits back the man goes to jail and the woman doesn't. That is how it should be. But usually if a woman hits first and a man hits back they both go to jail. That isn't how it should be. Of course it doesn't always work like that but more often than not women get much more leeway in those types of scenarios than men do.

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

Women still can't serve in the frontlines in some first world militaries. They have to take far more precautions not to get raped when they go out to some places than men do, and we tend to judge them more harshly if they demonstrate sexually-forward attitudes.

Try being forced to carry an developing fetus in your body that you don't want; it's not easy. At least in America, I'm pretty sure that this could be unconstitutional under the thirteenth amendment; you might be able to consider this "involuntary servitude". From a purely ethical standpoint, it's the woman's body, therefore, she determines who or what has her permission to use it and how.

Translation: Feminism is unnecessary because women are expected to look pretty and not have a job, while men are expected to be bread winners.

Except for the fact that women get killed and/or hospitalized in these situations far more often. Major advantage there. The unfairness in the way people view male victims of DV may have something to do with the way we view men who get beat up by women (it's often a source of comedy to mention that a man lost a fight to a girl) and this may be perpetuated by the notion that men are inherently stronger than women. We should also take things like actual damage done into account, I think.

      • Basically everything democritusjr said in their post, plus I'd add a few things.

"Although I really don't think many women would want to do that anyway lol."

-how patronizing! People said shit like that about women voting and entering the workforce. "Silly women....they don't know what's good for them! I can't imagine why they'd wanna do that stuff. Amirite?!"

"The women can abort the child and the father's input is irrelevant."

        -DAMN RIGHT!

You don't realize how awful it is to suggest women be forced to carry a pregnancy? You also may not realize that this exact issue is being pushed to become law in some states. We need people fighting this. Feminism does that.

"You've heard of a deadbeat dad, but never a deadbeat mom."

Moms who abandon their kids are seen as the lowest of the low, way lower than absent dads. Women are expected to be mothers and caregivers and when they stray in the least bit from that role they are judged very harshly, much more harshly than men. "working mothers" are even looked down on. The term "working mother" itself is ridiculous. Have you ever heard of a "working father"? Nope! Because Dads are Dads no matter what other roles they take on in life. Moms get judged and labeled for everything they do.

  • Feminism has done a lot as far as giving women social power throughout history, but I'm not sure how necessary it is today.
Of course there is discrimination and inequality against men and women as well as people of any categorized group, but no single movement or idea will bring about equality for all.

  • I don't think feminism is needed to be honest. Maybe there are some gender issues still around but I don't think feminism is the group to help on those issues because they cause more issues such as this whole "manspreading" thing.

  • Radicalism has always been counter productive to improvement.
Rational discussion and peaceful protest are a more enlightened path.

  • Feminism has no purpose anymore in civilized countries.

If you want to fight the patriarchy, go to Kurdistan and join a female battalion so you shoot terrorists who are actually oppressing women.

But that's too dangerous for a first world feminazi, isn't it?
Why should they risk their lives for their fellow women when they can attack people on the internet all day and cause public disruptions on nice safe university campuses with their gender studies classmates?

    • Picking up a gun and shooting terrorists is not the only way to help and make a difference. Why belittle the people speaking out to express their concerns and beliefs? It may seem annoying to you, but it's much less destructive than war.
Besides, even though women have been allowed in the military for a while now, they weren't allowed in the front lines of combat until recently. Even when women wanted to "risk their lives for their fellow women" they were told they couldn't because they couldn't be counted on as much as a male soldier. Yes, feminism is still necessary.
