  • Have to come to the defence of wasps here.

At this time of year in the northern hemisphere, wasps and hornets are busy raising their young. They need protein for that, so they're out hunting other insects and they're not really interested in humans. When a wasp feeds a grub a tasty treat of mushed-up fly or whatever, the grub secretes a sweet liquid which the adult wasp drinks. It's only late in the summer when the nests have stopped producing young that wasps become a nuisance. There's really nothing for them to do other than hang around waiting to die, and they're not getting their sugar fix anymore, so that's when they start bothering people.

I'm a beekeeper, and so buzzy, stingy things don't really phase me. If I see a wasp in the house at this time of year, I try to usher it out, but I wouldn't want a wasp or hornet nest near the house, mainly because I know what's going to happen in a few months.
