  • I was a bartender for YEARS....a dollar is a good tip for a beer. If it's a mixed drink, then it kinda depends on the complexity. If it's just a Jack and Coke, or a simple one-liquor shot, then probably a dollar or 2 per drink, but if I have to mix more than 3 or 4 ingredients, then $3. If it's a fucking frozen margarita where I gotta get out the blender, the you better tip more like $4 each drink.

I always treated everyone the same service-wise whether they tipped or not, however I'd do special favors for people who tipped well (free drink or free songs on the juke, whatever). The worst thing I ever did to a customer who was a pain in my ass and didn't tip at all, was lied to her and told her I already closed out the register and couldn't sell her another drink (technically I had about 5 min to last call)...but fuck that cunt, she was nasty and didn't tip, and she wants me to make her another drink when I'm about to get to go home?? Ha.

Oh...ha, yes, I almost forgot! There was a regular customer, every day he'd come in and have a few vodka and Sprites. He NEVER left a tip, he'd always leave the swizzle sticks there as if that was my tip. I hated that prick but he never knew it, I always served him with a smile. Then one day, I look over, his glass was empty, he was gone, and there was $2 on the bar. I thought, holy fucking shit he tipped me!!! But, nope, turns out he had just gone out to the parking lot for some reason. He asked where his $2 went and I told him I thought he'd left and that it was a tip. He laughed and laughed, as if how dare I even think he'd EVER leave a tip....and I had to take the $2 out of my tips and get him his drink. What a fucking prick. Not only didn't he tip but it was like he took pleasure in getting served and not tipping. I never treated him differently, I just made fun of him whenever he left.

    • Wow, you show a lot of discipline by not punching that guy in the face! What a jerk!

      • Heh, well I loved the job, and I learned quick how to deal with people. I know, it doesn't seem like I'm the type of person who wouldn't punch a guy in teh face because of how I am on here but really, I am fairly easygoing in real life. I certainly have my moments but when it comes to work I am always nothing but professional and exceptional!!

        • Indeed. I applaud you good madam.

A friend of mine once told me about the customers at his job with a fast food establishment. The insight he shared with me is that you have to learn not to let it phase you; the next customer will be the same way and there's nothing you can do about it.
