But, the movie named "Mahogany" was not about a stripper. It was about a fashion designer.
It had a great them song ("Do you know where your going to": 1975 Cover by Diana Ross), that charted #1 in the USA and often in the top 10 in most other countries that charted English songs worldwide.
Diana Ross played a lady named Tracy who wanted to become a fashion designer. On the way to that goal she became a model with the stage name "Mahogany."
But, success is nothing if you don't have someone you love to share it with... and despite becoming a famous fashion designer based in Rome with all kinds of money... She leaves Rome to return to her roots to marry the one she loves (a local political activist in her home city in the USA).
So I associate the name "Mahogany" with females.
You might want to check out the movie. Diana Ross at her best (and never matched in any of her other movies), although she did have other #1 songs in her singing career.
ps: (Added later) In the end its a romance movie... Your wife would likely like it.

I mean that mahagony sounds more of a masculine name. Perhaps because ebony was taken up as feminine sounding name.
