Irritated when someone talks just for the sake of talking

Am I the only person who is irritated when people talk just to be talking?

For example, I go on a trip with someone, a four hour drive, is it really necessary to talk every minute the entire time? I actually was riding with someone who would read billboards and road signs out loud and when I asked why she said just to be talking.

This drives me crazy. I don't see what's so wrong about being together in silence. I'm not saying we should never talk, but can't there be a middle ground where the conversations you have are intelligent and pertinent. If I don't have something to say I'm not going to sit there and rack my brain to think of something to talk about just to have noise.

And when it comes to stupid questions I'm finding it harder and harder not to give the sarcastic response my inner voice gives me. Another example, I'm on a date, I order lasagna, he asks "do you like lasagna?" Inner voice is screaming "no I hate it, I just order it every time because I've been bad and I want to punish myself!!!"

So, is it normal to be irritated by unnecessary chatter?

Is It Normal?

  • I agree. People need to learn to quit being afraid of silence.

  • It's totally normal. I work with a guy who talks constantly. To make things worse, he doesn't want anyone else's opinion and speaks with a monotone voice. Everyone tries to avoid him, and your heart sinks when he corners you.

    • I have to deal with a guy like this regularly and it's painful. He's a simple farm boy who can talk about the weather and farm equipment for hours. Like how does anyone listen to him drone on and on without getting pissed. I used to be polite to him but starting to lose all patience.

  • What are some synonyms of monologue(ing)?
I know a guy, that once he starts on a subject he won't stop. Even after you tell him good-bye and walk away, he's still talking!

  • I'm so glad I found this!!!! It actually makes me feel a lot better to know that I'm not the only one out there that feels like this!!!
My mother in law just doesn't know what silence means. We can't watch a movie or any kind of tv without her making some kind of comment like: oh look that girl is getting poked, is she related to such and such? Is that person going to die? Is that the mother of the kid? Grrrrrrrrrrr lady we are watching the same show!
Also, it irritates the hell out of me that she is one of the biggest one uppers I've ever met! You cannot say anything without her hving a story for you, I mean anything!!!
    Me: oh look it's raining!
Her: oh yeah let me tell you about raining, this one time when I was 11 it was raining an then my friend such and such bla bla bla bla!
    I cannot stand it anymore!
But I can't discuss it with my hubby! He gets overly protective of her, I need some advise! :(

    • I've been there with my MIL - the incessant yakking, the one-upping and she was bitchy and sly to boot (always when hub wasn't around natch). No real advice. I was just getting around to making a plan when we heard she was ill and she croaked. We usually outlive MILs so we can evemtually experience some peace in marriage :)

  • Iin, but it also is silly. Some people enjoy silence or only talking about topics that they think are important while for others the act of talking itself is pleasurable and a good, fun conversation is something to be cooperatively made, rather than decided upon beforehand.

Or she could have been bored and a little disturbed because she was sitting next to some grumpy guy that obviously disliked whatever she did so she futiley tried to find something to talk about no matter how mundane

  • I find it normal. Some people just need to fill the silence with words, but we might not be in the mood for listening to them.

  • Some people just can't sit in silence comfortably. It can get annoying but just look at it as a nervous reaction. I get irritated by it too because I'm shy and normally introverted myself. I agree that it's normal to dislike this but just try to have patience. Good Luck~

  • There is such a thing as companionable silence. And people can be gently told that. But lighten up on people who are just trying to make conversation. That's just rude.

  • Well, it certainly seems normal to me. I have the same problem. Can't stand it when someone is just rambling on and on....totally pisses me off and makes me want to slap the snot right out of them! And another thing....if I'm sitting in a room just resting, trying to meditate, taking a long hot bath, reading a book, or whatever, and someone comes in and turns on the TV or the radio, it annoys the shit out of me! If I wanted the freaking noise I would have turned the damm thing on myself! They need to have some common courtesy and ask me if I mind if you turn it on, you know what I mean?? Damn inconsiderate people!!
