I can tell you as a gay person myself, that if you truly are gay, that you shouldn't be afraid to embrace it. Accept yourself for who you are, but only come out to people when you feel ready and comfortable.
Honestly speaking, popularity is something that you shouldn't be concerned with. It's just a short-lived phase in life, and it'll fade with time. The problem with teens and young adults today, is that alot of you guys are obsessively concerned about pleasing your friends, even going as far as to taking on a false identity.
You, as well as any one of us, we're not put on this Earth to cater to people and to please them. If any of your friends are true friends, they will accept you for who you are regardless of your popularity rating and/or sexuality.
Your mom might not like gay people, but if she truly loves you, she will be open-minded enough to accept you for who you are. When somebody truly and genuinely loves you, they're able to look past certain attributes about you, and see you for the person that you are. Your mom can dislike, or even hate your sexuality as much as she wants, but as long as she accepts it (because it won't change) and accepts you, that's the important thing.
Don't ever deny yourself. Open up to people when you're confident and ready, and don't concern yourself too much about what others think about you. It's about how you feel and how YOU view yourself.
