It's both mental illness and trauma. The emotional trauma of losing your children and being teased brought on the depression. Depression is a mental illness. It's normal to have racing thoughts if you have depression. If you aren't already getting help for the depression or the drug use, you should talk to a doctor or therapist.
If you find yourself thinking negatively and can't really seem to control it, try doing light physical exercises like jumping jacks. Try focusing on counting as you do them. Sometimes you can get some relief from racing thoughts by shifting your attention to something that's more demanding, but isn't mentally taxing. Even if it doesn't work well, the after affects of exercising can boost your mood.
Another good thing to do is to write down what you are thinking. Just write it as it comes to you. Whatever it is. You can throw the paper away when you are done if you want, or delete it if you want to type it out. No one has to see it. Save it if you want too. It's a good way to get thoughts out of your head.
