Is it normal women like my short hair but men dont

I had to get a big chop because I have anxiety and have been cutting at my own hair due to neuroses and ocd. It looked effed up. Went from long bob to sort of " Italian cut" ( like Elizabeth Taylor or Rizzo in Grease had). Women I know have said it's cute and they like my waves etc.
But men either looked like they don't like it one outright said " holy crap you got a big ass haircut!". Gee thanks I feel self conscious enough having to cut a lot off. Did men's mother's not teach them to keep rude comments to themselves? No I didn't ask their opinion. I don't look butch what's the big deal?
