Is it normal white lies annoy me

My best friend is like a "smooth talker." Every time I say something (I guess when she doesn't know how to respond) she lies. Like I'll say I got you a gift for christmas! And she'll be like "Oh I got you one too." (and i can just tell shes not telling the truth) Then when I give it to her, I was right! She has nothing for me, just the urge to lie. (Not mad that I didn't get a gift, just the lying that bothers me.) Is it normal that I get so annoyed by this? I feel like it's fake, she thinks she's so smart in having a made up comeback she can't just be real

Is It Normal?

  • Most people don't appreciate liars. Why do you put up with her lying?

    • I guess I put up with it because we have a long history. Also I just don’t know how to respond to that.. lol

      • a lot of people spew out good intentions too, always feeling more confident to do things tomorrow rather than today. Always talking up the future not only lying to others but themselves too. If i were you i would just slowly point out things as they happen, Such as with the gift example point out that she said she got you a gift, don't call her liar, juts be like oh I thought you said you got me a gift too..but don't be mad about it, you can say its no big deal or whatever but if enough of these happen where she feels a bit caught out from your sharp memory of what she says, she may start to realize that she's speaking too much before thinking, and that if she says she's going to do something or even if she "white lies" about already having done something that she intends to do soon, that she should mean it. Thats what i would do at least, just casually non confrontationally point them out when the white lies come full circle, and she may adapt.

another way to tackle it would be to just directly tell her you've noticed this happen but frame it in a kind way, saying something like " hey I don't believe you do this maliciously or anything, But i think sometimes you have a lot of good intentions of doing certain things, so much so that you'll even in the moment say that you've already done such and such a thing when you haven't , but more often than not you don't do it"

  • This is your "Best Friend?" Who is in second place? Seriously, if this person is worth it, have a long talk with them about what you want in a friend. If not worth it, promote # 2 to your best friend and move on.
