Is it normal vet refusing to help sick young kitten?

My mum recently got a kitten for me who is only a few weeks old and not weaned yet (she has the kittens mum and is taking care of them) I haven't met the kitten yet cause I haven't been over her house but I am planning on visiting in a week. She told me that apparently the kitten has grown sick and has runny eyes, nose, sneezing and high temperature. She told me he is very weak and wont meow anymore.

She rung up the nearest vet and apparently they told her there is nothing they can do to help, which I call bullshit because I have volunteered as a veterinarian (not at the one my mum called)

The thing is I don't think my mum has any other vets near her, she has recently moved out into the country and most likely any other vets nearby will take her hours to drive to. If there is anything at home my mum can do herself to help the kitten, please give me your suggestions. I don't want him to die as he is only a baby.

    I'm confused.

    1. Since you volunteered at the vet, what could your mother's vet have done for the kitten? Because calling bullshit implies you know exactly what's wrong with him/her.

    2. Why ask here? I know we have a strong attachment to this site, but... you actually volunteered at a vet and have friends (or acquaintances at the very least) you can ask who can give waaaaaay better answers than anyone here.

    3. The sad fact is, not all kittens make it.

    • 1. his symptoms indicate he has some form of cold or fever, vets usually give some form of antibiotic (specifically for animals) specially if they have some sort of respiratory problem.

      2. cause i don't know where else to go, i volunteered years ago and don't have any contacts with the people i worked there with.

      3. of course, but as a veterinarian who's job is to specifically HELP animals with infection/being ill/hurt, saying "there's nothing we can do" on the fucking phone without even suggesting in bringing in the animal in question for a checkup is fucking lazy and irresponsible on their part. how the fuck would they know if they can't help the kitten or not without even fucking seeing it?

She should insist that the vet see the kitten.

Best reply so far. As long as your willing to pick up the tab. Also, DO NOT GIVE IT ASPIRIN. My grandmother did this and killed a whole litter.

The kitty is just sick it's not very important just watch over him and its very important that he sleeps and get some energy to fight the virus

Are you sure the vet didn't say h/she could do nothing over the phone? Why doesn't she just take the kitten to the vet?
