Last year I thought Kaepernick was being stupid. But after Trump called them Son's Of Bitches who ought to be fired I was hoping people would take the knee as a way of saying Fuck You Trump. Kind of ridiculous when you consider how nice he was to torch wielding Nazi's chanting "Jew will not replace us." compared to a couple guys silently kneeling.

I'd prefer a country where people stand for the anthem out of pride rather than fear or coercion.

I had to laugh at Trump's idea that people will boycott sports over this and that ratings will go down. Yeah right. That is downright delusional.

In the more serious side, I find it disgusting that he is so rabidly against peaceful protest. That IS America! No talk about why these people are protesting, no productive discussion...just trying to put them down for it and silence them.

Alright wigz, how's your favorite team doing? What jerseys do you own, and who is in your fantasy football league?

You need to realize that you are not in the target audience for football. The NFL virtue-signalling to folks like you who don't even watch the games is suicide when it comes at the cost of their fanbase.

Trump is making millions of the older generation realize the idiocy of the Left, and the Democratic Party is now associated with Colin Kaepernik taking a knee.

I don't care about any of that, really...just saying nobody is turning off football over this.

And criticizing such protest is shitty, for a president.

I know you don't care, but that's my point: because you don't care, you really can't make the statement that "nobody is turning off football over this".

There is a ton of crossover between the military and football fans, as just one example. To them this gesture is an insult for what they serve to protect, and what loved ones have died for.

I may not be into sports myself but I know people who are and I've been alive for 39 years now and seen many, many other sports 'controversies'. I know how this goes.

The guy who started this gesture said himself that kneeling was to show respect for the military.

"Kaepernick’s protest first occurred 13 months ago, but was not immediately noticed. At that point, he simply sat on the benches during the US national anthem during a preseason game, just next to the giant Gatorade jugs next to him.

But, he later transitioned to taking a knee in protest - saying he was doing so to show more respect for military veterans - which turned out to be a much more iconic pose. Several other players joined his protest, even though they received a lot of criticism from football fans who said that it was disrespectful to the United States. Still, the movement did not gain huge traction last year.

"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people, and people of color," Kaepernick said in a press conference after first sitting out during the anthem."

We're allowed to express ourselves freely in this country. Any member of the military who has a problem with that has the wrong idea of what 'fighting for freedom' is. Our president and our military should be the first ones to support peaceful protest.

You think motivations matter at this point? You pulled that quote from an article (I assume), and you have to realize hardly anyone will have read that or will have cared.

The problem here for ESPN (and the Left) is optics: a protest of any kind during such a moment in inherently 'unpatriotic'. There are two brands competing here: Black Lives Matter and America.

Guess which brand is stronger, and that is the side that will win.

(Also, don't appeal to legality of 'taking the knee'. No one argues that it should be illegal: only that it is morally a bad thing to do.)

Except for the veterans and servicemembers who support their constitutional right to protest.

Those you mention are in the minority of the military, and are likely already liberals or at least anti-Trumpers. They are willing to disgrace a symbol of pride to their comrades all for political purposes.

              Sad!

    • I haven't been able to look into it much. What's happened exactly? What are they protesting, etc?

Around a year ago, an NFL player sat on the bench during the national anthem as a protest against police brutality and the treatment of people of color. There was a bit of ruffling of feathers over it but it wasn't a huge deal. A few other players joined him. They started taking a knee instead of sitting to show respect for veterans while still protesting. Trump decided he didn't like this and threw a huge fit over it (the other person who replied was correct about that...Trump did yell and scream over it and put out a bunch of ugly tweets). Once he did that, lots of people and players were pretty horrified and more players joined the protest.

I find it appalling that the president would react like that to legal peaceful protest. I don't care what the cause of the protest is, it's a fundamental right we have to do so and the president is supposed to uphold the Constitution. Condemning people for exercising their rights, calling them 'sons of bitches' and calling for them to be fired is just so wrong. He can be offended but his reaction was highly inappropriate and that is why it has turned into a big deal.

        • Ahh, I get it now, thanks.

Kind of agree with you. I do think it's their right to protest and I do think the president maybe got a bit hot headed by calling for them to be fired, although I could understand him voicing his disapproval, if done right.

I think it's a bit annoying that they're now turning sports into politics by doing this, which is why I'd find it annoying. Weren't competitive sports introduced, studium like ones, to let people forget the world woes and have sonething everyone could enjoy in unity, or was that just the collosseums?

So while I agree it's their right to protest, I don't think it's the time and place, nor do I think it's fair to force your protest onto paying customers who just want to watch a game.

In other news. You watch Rick and Morty? :P

I see both sides of the politics/protests in games. On one hand, it is entertainment and maybe people get bummed seeing that but from the protesters perspective, they have something to say that means a lot to them and they have the platform to put it out there and get attention to their cause. I really don't know what the right answer is. I know Family Guy really started pissing me off a while back when it turned way too political but it was much more in-your-face and often mean spirited so it's not exactly the same. I dunno.

No...I haven't watched Rick and Morty yet but I probably will give it a shot. I've been hearing a lot about it. Super busy right now though...just bought a house so we're doing a lot of work on it to get it ready and then moving over the weekend. It's crazy. Hope you are doing well!

            • Yeah, I get what you mean. In my eyes I think they're exploiting their position to bring one aspect of life into a completely different aspect of life when they're best seperate.

Aye, deffo give Rick and MOrty a try but force yourself through the first few episodes like I had to.
Oooo! New house, new beginnings! Is it a nice place? :)
Thanking ya, and hope you're doing well too!

Orange Julius got all pissy because a bunch of football players are peacefully protesting all the shit that went down in Charlottesville. He also got mad at steph curry /LeBron James because they declined his invite to the white house. He went on a foul mouth tirade and demanded the owners fire them NOW!!!!!!!!

        • I got a bit caught up and I think you may be exaggerating it a little. I think it's understandable for someone to get upset about protesting symbols of unity for your country, that said it is their right to protest.
