Farmers rely on cats to control mice and rats. Without our barn cats, we would've been overrun with rodents. We never once had to resort to poisons or traps on our farm thanks to the cats.
If the rodents were not controlled, they would eat and ruin the grain supply and cause many other problems, including becoming so numerous that they would migrate to other places, maybe YOUR house, looking for food.
I'm sure the cat's pest control in general is tremendously beneficial to all humans.

I'm sorry, what purpose does a cat serve society? To act as a bird killer and to shit in your house in a box?
Don't see them helping humans in any significant way. Scientifically proven that the common dog is much smarter than the average household cat.

Cats helped me with my depression :l
