  • *Another person who confuses the severe mental hindrance of Obsessive Compulsive DISORDER for a minor/miniscule idiosyncrasy.

    No.

    • O.P. after re-reading your story and the comments that follow, I realize that I may have over-reacted a bit in a negative manner towards you. For that I apologize. Surely now, after reading the comments, you are aware of the differences and why this common mistake tends to upset certain people.

I do have a few minor obsessive tendencies myself. Not obsessive compulsive disorder, but I will list them for you since it was what you were originally wondering.

-One of them is counting the number of gulps I take when drinking something.

-After I brush my teeth, I tap my toothbrush on the sink five times.

-Papers always must be tamped against a flat surface to make them straight and organized.

-Toilet paper must be used in amounts of three sheets at a time. Though I think this one was just how I was raised rather than my own habit.

-Loose cords must be wrapped neatly in coils with rubber-bands securing them.

Those are just a few I could think of right away, I'm sure there is more.

    • That's not what she's saying. She's saying that everyone has a little bit of OCD (which they do) and she's asking what yours is.

      • I'm gonna start by saying this is not an attack on you, it's just a particularly sore point for me so I'm gonna have my little rant.

The OP has used incorrect terminology. Not everyone has a bit of OCD. Everyone has idiocyncracities, as Shackleford says.

My friend had OCD. Actual OCD. It ruled his life to the point that he was unable to leave his house. He had no life because he was controlled by his routines. He bled from scrubbing with steel wool to remove unclean thoughts and he would then have to sterilise his whole house. If a single thing was out of order he would be incapacitated for hours or even days with his rituals to right the things he perceived as wrongs. I don't have the time or energy to outline all the horrid things Nick did to himself because of his illness.

He killed himself about four years ago now because he couldn't live with it and the mental anguish and exhaustion it caused him.

Doing odd little things is very different from having OCD. It is offensive and frustrating to those who live with it and those of us who love them when the term is bandied about until it loses its true meaning.

        • I am sorry for your loss. That is really sad.

Thank you for sharing this though, I think it's a perfect example of why this common mistake that people make tends to make me and others such as yourself angry/upset.

          • Thank you I appreciate it.

Yeah I was literally shaking with rage when I typed that up so I do apologise to Keddersprincess...the rage was in no way directed at her.

You alluded to being close to someone who has it(or did I read too much into it?) which explains why you're on these topics, too. If it is yhe case, I hope they find successful treatment.

            • No, sorry, I didn't mean to make you think I know/knew someone personally with obsessive compulsive disorder. I don't. I just am aware that there are people that seriously have this disorder and it bugs me when it is trivialized. Thank you for the sentiment though, I appreciate it regardless.

      • Thank you for the explanation, and I understand that. Like charli.m said though, she should have used different terminology. It's a common mistake though, and I just get angry sometimes.

  • My phone won't let me thumbs up / down or reply, but Shackleford definitely said it perfectly.

  • OCD. IS A DISORDER.
You can't have 'a little OCD', then you're just annoyed by something.

  • I hate the number six. I have to turn off the lights over and over again until it feels right at night, and I have to take my ipod out of it's ihome for fear that it will play on its own.

  • The volume has to be on an even number, if one of my hands gets wet then the other has to be as well, or I frantically try and dry it. I'm also quite a germaphobe because I once caught a nasty bug from town, so I can't eat or apply Vaseline to my lips without using anti-bacterial hand gel. When I sleep at night, there has to be a piece of fabric between my legs, as I hate the feeling of the skin on my legs touching. There are loads more, but I can't think right now. XD

  • It's apparent you've never been embarrassed before or you would know what OCD really is.

      • For example, I have to twitch my mouth certain ways and when people notice, they comment about it, sometimes making fun of it. Or when knock on wood, which I have to often, I have to knock exactly three times with each hand, in a certain way, then blow on the wood after, no matter where I am or who's there. The best one is when I walk, I have to step on tiles a certain way, avoiding cracks, which I have to step on a certain way when I mess up. It's quite embarrassing to be in public places. There's lots of other stuff, too, but it's a long list.

  • Heck yes my friend!!! Ooh ooh!! Mine is just about everything under the sun moon and stars! But one of my biggest is when things are uneven or they're where I know they're not supposed to be!! ;D

  • Yeah its normal for things like that and OCD is a health consern so it is normal to want to know

  • My OCD is being asked open-ended questions and given yes/no options to answer.
