Is it normal to want a pet rat?

I want a pet rat so bad. I heard they are like little puppies forever. People say they play tag with your hands and let you pet their tummies and that they give you kisses. Are they really so affectionate? I have a ferret cage with 1/2" spacing for them, and I'm going to adopt two neutered males. I live on my own and need an animal or two I can care for easily in my apartment. But are they really so nice and loving? And is it normal?

  • If reared well, they're lovely pets. I've always wanted one but was never allowed. One of my best friends in high school had one. She wasvery sweet and well trained.

  • Rats are illegal in my province and I am really upset they are so cute I keep seeing pictures of rats with tiny teddy bears and they look so fat and docile I can't handle it! go for it I'm jealous! I had a friend who smuggled two rats that were sisters over from the states and they loved swimming in the bath tub and they would twist their tails together and walk side by side and they were the sweetest little animals.

  • Yes, they can be very good and affectionate pets if you train them right and give them lots of attention. A friend of mine from middle school used to have some. He also had a hedgehog too, which was awesome.

  • My aunt had three rats before, they all died from tumors though. They were fun to play with and hers liked to crawl all over you. Just make sure you don't lose them in the sheets and get any weird lumps checked out.

  • Rats make wonderful pocket pets! I always say if you can't have a dog or a cat get a rat. Rats are intelligent and affectionate whereas say hamsters are very overrated. I had rats as pets in my twenties and they were so ssweet! A rat can learn it's name and come when it's called. Rats give lovely kisses, need I say more?

  • Talking from no experience, they should be vaccinated.

    • There are no vaccinations for domesticated rats or mice. They are clean animals, unless humans force them to live in filthy cages.

  • You also sound like you'd do better with a pet that was not smarter than you.
