Is it normal to unwrap a gift on christmas eve?

This is my boyfriend and my first Christmas. He mentioned his family has a tradition of opening one gift on Christmas Eve. I’ve never heard of that and want to do my family’s tradition of waiting until Christmas morning to open any presents. We both live far from family and will be spending the holiday just the two of us. So, more normal to unwrap one on Christmas Eve, or no?

Some families open one or more gifts on Christmas eve, others wait until Christmas morning. There's no law about this, and neither is weird or wrong.

You and your boyfriend have the right to do whatever you want. Contrary to all the BS propaganda, Christmas can be very stressful, so the last thing you want is to make a big deal out of something so utterly trivial. Your family's way of doing things isn't the "right" way; it's just your family's way. If you insist that his family's way is the "wrong" way, that bodes ill for your relationship.

Find a compromise you can both live with.

You could stay up till midnight if you must compromise and open one then and it will technically be Christmas.

  • Growing up that was one thing my family did too one gift on Christmas eve. Last year we opened all on Christmas eve because Christmas day is busy. And hopefully will this year too cause I don’t just have one Christmas to attend. Makes things easier.

I know a number of people who open a gift on Christmas Eve. Seems normal to me.

My family always opened all our gifts on Christmas eve after dinner.

Normal but who cares. Make your own traditions and do what you enjoy. That's the point. No need to make everything a big deal.
