The only reason humans do the "mate for life" thing is because of morals instilled by fear in the dark ages when the catholic church made the law, but we are biologically more similar to animals that do have multiple partners. (dolphins and monkeys for example)
I'm in an open relationship. Its also the most stable, caring relationship I've ever been in with a guy I know I'm probably gonna end up marrying. But I made the call to make it open because I feel people need to have that freedom... Dating someone doesn't imply ownership, and everyone seems to think they have this huge claim on their significant others person. No one even questions if it's right to control someone that much...
