Both views make perfect sense - if you believe you have to be prattling away about some trivial crap every moment you're with someone else.
When you say you "appear awkward" when you're silent, what you mean is that you _believe_ others are thinking you're awkward when you're not wittering on. It's possible that is what they're thinking, but it's also possible you're projecting your insecurity.
If the people you associate with are so shallow, so immature and so needy for constant stimulation that they can't cope with silence when you're with them, then maybe you should think about finding some different friends who know that there is such a thing as comfortable silence when people are together.
